DNV carries out certification of various types of winches for a number of functions. Depending on the customer’s wish, we may certify winches and gears/ brakes based on our own Rules, or according to specified standards, codes or requirements. The requirements to be met will depend on use, possible class notation needed and/ or the specification requested by the customer.

DNV’s Rules for Classification of Ships and/or DNV’s Rules for Certification of Lifting Appliances are usually the basis for our certification.
Various types of winches
For certain types of winches, DNV certification is mandatory or it may be mandatory to meet the requirements for a specific class notation. Examples are:
Crane winch: If to be used in an offshore crane or for cranes included in additional class notations CRANE or Crane Vessel, the winch must be delivered with DNV’s certificate. If the winch is used in a ship/industrial crane without class coverage, the manufacturer's certificate will suffice.
Towing winch: Certification is mandatory for vessel's class notation Tug and Supply Vessel where towing winches are included in the class.
Mooring winch: Certification of mooring winches is carried out on a voluntary basis.
Life-saving equipment: The winch must be certified in accordance with SOLAS and/or the EU Marine Equipment Directive.
For other types of winches a DNV certification is, in most cases, voluntary.
DNV certification requires
- Design approval.
- Manufacturing survey.
- Testing.
Design approval
Design approval for winches is normally ordered for one specific manufacturing assignment. However, it may also be requested for unspecified manufacturing within an agreed time window, in which case a Type Approval Certificate will be issued. Furthermore, some customers order design review as a separate service, and may get the result confirmed in a Design Verification Report (DVR). Such services are frequently requested to be based on standards and codes other than DNV’s, and/or on national authority requirements.
DNV also offers design approval/type approval of winch gears and brakes as separate components.
