Type Examination (TE) is a variant form of Type Approval (TA). The Type Examination is based on Rules or standards other than DNV's, for example ISO, NS etc. When TE is chosen, acceptance of the design is granted for a period of normally 4 years, as for the Type Approval.

The acceptance of design is then given for certain applications and within specified limitations. This means that the design is accepted for all projects which require conformity with the chosen standard, as long as it is used within the applications and limitations specified.
TE could be the preferred design assessment procedure for products manufactured in series. Benefits to Manufacturer with Type Examined products:
- Shorter delivery time for the product.
- Less work and lower cost.
- Easier to obtain access to the market including free marketing.
Typical products/standards:
- Winches: ISO3730 Mooring Winches, ISO7365 Towing Winches.
- Accommodation ladders: ISO5488 Accommodation Ladders, ISO799 Pilot Ladders.
- Bollards: NS2584 Bollards.
- Shark Jaws: SMD's Regulations of 15 September1992 No. 695 concerning the construction of passenger ships, cargo ships and barges.
