DNV through our Section for Fire Safety has been recognized by the Norwegian Directorate for Civil Protection and Emergency Planning (DSB- Direktoratet for Samfunnssikkerhet og Beredskap) to certify and issue corresponding certification licences for portable fire extinguishers that are to be presented for sale on the Norwegian consumer market.

In order to sell portable fire extinguishers in Norway, it is required by DSB that the extinguishers are certified by a recognized body and marked accordingly. The extinguishers certified by DNV will hold a mark of conformity, the DNV logo, and a licence number in their label. In addition, each manufacturer or dealer/importer will receive a certification licence from DNV specifying the actual production facilities and type of extinguishers certified for each facility. Please note that the containers for portable fire extinguishers are subject to separate certification according to the Pressure Equipment Directive (PED) 97/23/EG, a directive for which DNV are appointed by the Norwegian Authorities to undertake approval and issuance of certificates

It should also be mentioned that all portable fire extinguishers produced for maritime use are still subject to certification according to the Marine Equipment Directive (MED) 96/98/EC and later amendments. (DNV are also appointed by the Norwegian Authorities to undertake approval and issuance of certificates stating conformance with the MED Directive.)
