Semi-conductor converters for motor drives rated above 100 kW and semi-conductor converters for power supplies rated above 50 kVA shall be delivered with a DNV Product Certificate.

Certification of semi-conductor converters is based on design assessment and product survey.

Design assessment

Design assessment shall be carried out prior to the product survey. The following documentation is typically to be submitted for approval:

  • Electrical data sheet.
  • Assembly layout.
  • Single line diagrams.
  • Switchgear rating document.
  • Functional description.
  • Schematic diagrams.
  • Test program.

Please refer to DNV rules Pt.4 Ch.8 Sec.1 Table B6 for details.

Product survey

A survey of the semi-conductor converter is performed at the manufacturer’s works as a part of the certification process. Both type tests (prototype tests) and routine tests are required. The survey normally includes:

  • Visual inspection.
  • Function tests.
  • Current test (type test).
  • Insulation resistance test.
  • High voltage test.
  • Short circuit current capability test (type test).
