The electrical systems on vessels and offshore units to be classed by DNV shall be built according to DNV’s rules for electrical systems:

  • DNV Rules for Classification of Ships, High Speed & Light Craft: Pt.4 Ch.8
  • DNV Offshore Codes: DNV-OS-D201

The rules give requirements to the electrical system with respect to:

  • Safety for personnel and fire hazard.
  • Availability of electrical systems serving services important and essential for vessel operation.

As a basis for assignment of class, DNV will verify that the electrical installation complies with the requirements of the rules. The verification process comprises:

  • Approval of system design.
  • Equipment certification.
  • Site survey.
