Purpose

To ensure that available onboard systems can support the intended design capacity of reefer containers.

Benefits

The notation will ensure the safe handling of and required flexibility in the transport of reefer containers. The voluntary RC-3 (X/Y) notation is intended for vessels carrying mostly deep frozen cargo with a design ratio of less than 50% chilled cargo.

The class notation indicates the maximum number of forty-foot equivalent refrigerated units (FEU) that may be carried on deck(x) and in the holds(y).
