Purpose

NAUTICUS(Newbuilding) is intended to reduce the risks of structural failure and ensure the adequate durability of the hull structure for the design life.

Benefits

DNV recognised the advantages of this method for analysing of ship and offshore structures at an early stage, and has over the years gained a lot of experience in its practical use. The aim of the strength analyses is to ensure that all important aspects of the ship's structural strength are well covered and documented. The notation ensures that the vessel's design is based on a finite element analysis for determining scantlings and extended requirements as to fatigue calculations.

Features

This class notation covers the use of finite element analysis for determining scantlings in the midship area and extended requirements as to fatigue calculations for end structures of longitudinals in the bottom, inner bottom, side, inner side, longitudinal bulkheads and upper deck.

The notation is mandatory for the following categories of ships:

  • Tankers for Oil with lengths of more than 190 m
  • Bulk Carriers ESP with lengths of more than 190 m (170 m for class notations HC/E, HC/EA)
  • Container Carriers with lengths of more than 190 m for ships with the PLUS and COAT notations

It requires a finite element calculation of the ship cargo holds at the design stage to obtain reliable results in terms of stresses and deformations, and it must be possible to analyse the structural details.

Process

The required calculations are carried out during the approval of the main hull drawings.
