Class notation for vessels breaking ice of 1.0 m level thickness

Print this page Save as PDF

Purpose

The notation ensures that the vessel has sufficient strength and equipment to continuously operate in the specified ice conditions of the Arctic, sub-Arctic and/or Antartic region without icebreaker assistance.

Benefits

You get a vessel which can operate unassisted in ice-infested waters of sub-Arctic, Arctic and/or Antarctic regions.

Features

The rules for vessels for arctic service are intended used for vessels operating unassisted in winter ice with pressure ridges as found in the Arctic, sub-Arctic and/or Antarctic regions. Ramming is not anticipated.

The following matters are covered by the classification:

  • Materials in structures exposed to low ambient air temperatures

  • Subdivision, intact and damage stability

  • Hull girder longitudinal and transverse strength

  • Local hull structures exposed to ice loads

  • Rudders and steering gears

  • Propellers and propulsion machinery

  • Sea suctions for cooling water

  • Air starting systems

  • Additional requirements to rudder, pods and hull appendages with respect to local dimensions and effect of direct ice loads

Process

Newbuilding plan approval and site survey in accordance with relevant parts of the Rules. Approval is carried out at responsible approval centre. Site survey is carried out at the building yard and its suppliers.
