Plan approval of the newbuilding design is part of the basis for issuing a class certificate. Approved drawings are the basis for the DNV Newbuilding surveys.

The approval includes a thorough evaluation of all main drawings, such as scantlings, systems and installations to such an extent that the design fully complies with international mandatory requirements, Flag State requirements as well as the DNV Classification Rules.

A copy of the main final approved drawings are kept at DNV throughout the vessel's lifetime.
