China in focus

China has joined the league of large container ship builders. Mr Ren Yuanlin of Yangzijiang Shipbuilding highlights the reasons for the country’s success in an interview with DNV’s James Huang in this issue of Container Ship Update.

20% market share for DNV in 2011

DNV has won a 20% market share of the newbuild orders placed for container ships so far in 2011 based on the number of ships. The market share is 19% based on TEU.

DNV with stronger container expertise

DNV’s container team has been strengthened. We have some new faces, and one of the old timers has been given new responsibilities.

Is technology the answer?

“This is going to be a cost decade, not a revenue decade,” claimed Martin Stopford, Lloyd’s List on 21 October. He was thinking about the potential oversupply of new ships coming into the market in the next few years, the rising oil price, and the environmental requirements being imposed on shipping.

Yangzijiang Shipbuilding’s secret of success

Yangzijiang Shipbuilding is another legend in China’s shipbuilding industry. As the first private shipbuilding enterprise to be listed in Singapore in 2007, Yangzijiang Shipbuilding has quickly ascended to become one of the world’s top 20 shipbuilders and China’s top five shipbuilders. Moreover, it has been included in China’s Top 500 Companies list for three consecutive years and ranks higher each year.

SPP building Metrostar’s 3,600 TEU container ships: Smart moves in the niche market

While mega container ships over 10,000 TEU in size are the hot issue in the market, SPP is focusing on a mid-size box ship series – Metrostar’s 3,600 TEU container ships

Guidelines on fuel saving measures for container ships

DNV and HSVA are jointly publishing the new “Guidelines on fuel saving measures for container ships”. These have been developed by the two organisations to help designers and operators find the best alternatives for fuel optimisation in various operating conditions. This follows up the success of the “Guidelines on fuel saving measures for bulk carriers”, which were issued in the summer 2011.

Benchmarking container ship designs

A new tool for comparing a ship design against a database of similar designs is now available from DNV. We can benchmark your design against the whole world fleet or a selection of comparable ship designs based on technical, operational and environmental indicators.

Improving the efficiency of diesel engines helps to reduce the fuel consumption and is on the priority list of engine makers and ship owners.

Signing the contract for the new SAVER design

The contract signing ceremony for the new series of 10,000 TEU container ships was held in Shanghai on 8 June.

Market suffers from Mega-Boxer oversupply

While container ship time-charter rates developed positively until early summer 2011, they have declined steeply since July. On the one hand, this had to be expected, but on the other hand especially the strength of the impact on smaller market segments too is to some extent surprising.
