Focus on China

China has re-defined itself as a key player in the world. In no other area is this clearer than in shipping. China is taking a dominant role not only as a ship builder but also as a ship owner. China is of course also a major exporter and importer of goods, with a huge impact on freight rates.

Crown 63 – a new pearl in the crown of Sinopacific

On 8 October 2011, the Sinopacific Shipbuilding Group, headed by Simon Liang – known in maritime circles for his big smile – secured a contract to build four firm plus two optional Crown 63 (63,500 dwt) Supramax bulk carriers for Ciner Shipping, a subsidiary of Turkey’s Ciner Group.

Yangzijiang Shipbuilding’s secret of success

Yangzijiang Shipbuilding is another legend in China’s shipbuilding industry. As the first private shipbuilding enterprise to be listed in Singapore in 2007, Yangzijiang Shipbuilding has quickly ascended to become one of the world’s top 20 shipbuilders and China’s top five shipbuilders. Moreover, it has been included in China’s Top 500 Companies list for three consecutive years and ranks higher each year.

Sanko makes history on Northern Sea Route: Largest bulk carrier and first Japanese ship is DNV-classed

CO2 emissions from ships – the latest IMO regulatory developments and what they mean for bulk carriers

The first formal CO2 control regulations were adopted by IMO at the MEPC 62 in July 2011. These comprise the Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) and Ship Energy Efficiency Management Plan (SEEMP), both of which will enter into force on 1 January 2013.

New revision of the Guideline for Fuel Saving Measures on Bulk Carriers

Emergency response – the proactive way

DNV’s Emergency Response Service (ERS) has a solid track record in helping bulk carriers in distress. Here, Captain Jan Solum, who heads the service, gives his views on what is needed in a crisis and outlines the ERS’s proactive approach to planning and emergency preparedness.

Virtual Training – a way to improve operational performance

The Survey Simulator (SuSi) is an innovative, photorealistic, 3-D training environment that helps teach owners’ and operators’ staff how to carry out technical inspections. It assists ship operators in improving and measuring their staff competencies in order to achieve incident-free operations and high standards of technical ship management.

Sombre dry bulk outlook with some brighter spots

The dry bulk market is experiencing rather healthy demand growth but is strongly affected by the consequences of excessive ordering of new vessels in recent years and will have to struggle with this for quite some time. Substantial slippage has given considerable market support, amounting to about 51% in 2009, 44% in 2010, and perhaps around 35-40% this year. These figures reflect the actual delivery of new tonnage compared with scheduled deliveries at the beginning of each year.
