NYK chose DNV SeaSkill for the certification of their training course because of their experience in the field of certification of courses and competence management services.

More than 50 years
NYK has run the own training centre in Yokohama for more than 50 years covering basic courses to specialised courses for different type of ships. The LNG training course was established in 1983 and approximately 2,000 seafarers underwent the training including practical training with simulators.

NYK improved its training course to meet both SIGTTO and DNV’s standards and the theoretical part of the approved course will be held in Japan, The Philippines, India and Croatia. The practical part including simulator exercises will be held at the Training Centre at Yokohama in the second week of the two-week course.

More skilled seafarers
Yasushi Yamawaki, who is also a director of SIGTTO, in his speech stressed that the approved course does not mean just complying with the industrial requirement but it is important to enhance the safe operation of LNG carriers. He also emphasised that the company’s long term policy in training seafarers will be continued as NYK has to secure more skilled seafarers as the LNG fleet managed by the company will be expanded from 17 to 40 ships by 2010. He also pointed out that the NYK Training Centre runs advanced courses for individual positions on LNG carriers. For example, advanced cargo operations, steam turbine simulation and high voltage electricity that are essential for safe operation and high quality ship management.

Trond Hodne praised NYK’s initiative as proactive and responsible in taking the lead in the industry to provide quality for LNG Carrier personnel in foreseeable future.

Erling Linna, Head of DNV Seaskill, said that DNV was proud to work with such a professional organisation as NYK in addressing the competence management issues of the industry.
