The Chairman of the Committee, Stavros Hatzigrigoris, general manager of Kristen Navigation, opened the meeting, welcoming the members and asking them to contribute to a discussion on the hot issues of JTP/JBP Rules.

DNV's technical director Olav Nortun presented a paper on the present status of the Joint Tanker Project (JTP) as derived after filtering the 2,600 comments received from the shipping industry during the rule hearing process, and the status of DNV's evaluation of the new rules for bulk carrier structures developed by the Joint Bulk Carrier Project (JBP). He made an interesting comparison of the different philosophies behind both rule sets and introduced possible future harmonisation scenarios.

An interesting discussion on the necessity for introduction of standards for coatings was held in connection with applicable corrosion margins in the new rules, while Espen Cramer, head of DNV Maritime Solutions described the services focused on the background, framework and the challenges faced by shipowners in connection with ship recycling. DNV's Green Passport for both newbuildings and existing ships is DNV's response for meeting forthcoming IMO requirements on ship recycling.

More and more shipping companies are at the stage of introducing risk assessment methodology in order to address the health, safety and environmental risks in their fleet operations. DNV's services to assist shipping companies to address risk management at all different levels were well presented by Ole Jacob Person, principal consultant of DNV Maritime Solutions.

The committee, which has been running successfully for a number of years now, provides valuable feedback for new rules under hearing. Its members comprise the technical directors of all the major Greek shipping companies and is taken well into account by DNV when making new rules or introducing new services for the maritime industry.
