Multiple product areas ranging from ISM certification and technical seminars to new competence-related activities have been concentrated in a new unit, which could ultimately reach a business volume of up to 10 per cent of DNV’s turnover, said Tor E. Svensen, chief operating officer of DNV Maritime in Hamburg last week.

“The human element business will not become as important as our ship structure work, but it will certainly form a major pillar of our portfolio,” Svensen predicted.

DNV has already certified eight training facilities worldwide under its newly introduced competence management system ‘SeaSkill’ aimed at raising the quality of job profiles which have so far not been covered by binding professional standards, such as technical superintendents, LNG cargo operators and ship electrical officers.
