A milestone event of the Malaysian Maritime Academy (ALAM) is the series of verifications under the aegis of DNV SeaSkill, which has lead to the award of a DNV MET Certificate in accordance with the requirements of the DNV Standard for Certification of Maritime Academies.

ALAM trains the vast majority of MISC sea staff. MISC is a subsidiary of the Malaysian oil and gas company Petronas and the world’s largest single owner/operator of an LNG fleet. MISC is also the second-largest world operator of Aframax Crude Oil tankers.
Alongside ALAM’s own process of reviewing its overall operations and ensuring the high quality of its nautical studies and marine engineering programmes, DNV SeaSkill has been contracted to certify courses, syllabi, equipment and facilities as well as staff qualifications and teaching abilities. “A recognised classification society like DNV, which has carried out maritime education and training certification around the globe, will certainly discern the standard needed,” comments Adthisaya Ganesen, the CEO of ALAM.
DNV SeaSkill has also signed several contracts for the certification of competence management systems. NYK Ship Management Singapore has contracted DNV SeaSkill to certify its system covering its head office and all of its tankers. See page 16 for the full story.
DNV will also certify Great Eastern Shipping’s (Gesco) competence management system, which covers Gesco’s head office and 30 tankers. “At Great Eastern, quality is next to none. A highly procedural-driven work culture with certification of our Competence Management System by DNV will only endorse the robustness of our system,” says Arun Sharma, president of Gesco. “This will go a long way towards our objective of enhancing customer expectations, among other things.”
“Our SeaSkill services establish a link between shipowners’ and ship managers’ needs and maritime education and training objectives. The potential for our services is tremendous in Asia, provided we deliver the right quality and maintain our customer orientation,” comments Amit Ray, DNV SeaSkill Area Manager for Asia.
