DNV SeaSkill was the sponsor of the 14th Ship Management Conference recently held in Cyprus

The event was part of the annual ship management conference held alternatively each year in Greece and Cyprus.
This leading event is seen as an important forum for the shipping community in the region to interact and exchange new ideas and news. As usual, this year's conference was attended by senior shipping executives from around the world.
This year's conference included presentations and panel discussions on the following subjects:
- New Legislation Affecting Ship Management - Competence management and personnel development
- Eastern Europe and China: Regional Developments in Ship Management
- Ports of Refuge: Importance and Expectations
- Flag States: Role and Responsibilities
- Challenges of Today's Technical Ship Management
- Managing Reputation
- Resolving the Manning Crisis
Shankar A. Narayan of DNV SeaSkill, which is part of Maritime Solutions, presented a paper entitled 'Increasing safety and profitability by focussing on Competence'. The paper highlighted the need to take a formal approach to competence management within the maritime industry. It also presented the efforts being made by DNV SeaSkill in this regard, including the launch of a certification service for Competence Management Systems within maritime organisations. The first company to apply for such certification is Teekay Shipping, this representing a global-first.
The head of DNV SeaSkill, Bjorgulf Haukelid says "It is important for us to show our support for the spread of new ideas in the shipping industry. DNV SeaSkill's work definitely contributes to this. Much of what we do is pioneering, and hence it is important for us to be part of events where the exchange of new ideas takes place."
The sponsorship of the conference is part of DNV SeaSkill's continued efforts to build awareness and gain acceptance for the concept of competence management within the maritime industry. The Cyprus conference was the second such event being sponsored by DNV SeaSkill this year. The previous one was in Oslo earlier in the year, and the next one is the 2nd LSM Manning & Training Conference in Shanghai in October.
