The International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) code was adopted by IMO in December 2002, effective 1 July 2004. This implies that all vessels in international trading must carry a valid ISPS certificate from this date, totalling up to more than 56,000 vessels.

Separating good from poor

The investigation of the Prestige incident is still not complete, but the picture so far implies what we all have known for a long time: quality in shipping has to do with ship management and operation as well as steel plates and hatch covers.

Taking necessary steps to change public opinion

In the aftermath of the latest ship disasters in Europe, the international media and the public are crying for actions to protect the marine environment. Shipping will face a serious problem if they avoid meeting the expectations of the society.

Time to put on the brakes

The European response to the Prestige accident has created a political storm between commercial and public interests. States are making rush decisions to prove they can handle environmental threats in what they perceive an effective manner.
