Flexible use of survey arrangements for machinery surveys can simplify class surveys and reduce costs. A flexible solution can be to make use of a Planned Maintenance System (PMS).

DNV offers different machinery survey arrangements with the same scope and safety level, representing different survey methods. The traditional survey arrangement, Machinery Renewal, is based on opening up of the machinery components every 5th year at renewal survey. Another survey arrangement is Machinery Continuous, where the surveys are carried out continuously over a five-year class period.
PMS for machinery surveys is based on annual audits of the planned maintenance system onboard. This arrangement is very flexible for the operators as the surveyor bases the survey of machinery components on documented maintenance history. Opening up of components for class survey can then be avoided.
Machinery PMS is based on an approval of the planned maintenance system itself, and its implementation onboard. Annual surveys are carried out in order to verify correct use and proper follow up of the system. Vessels on Machinery PMS are granted 15% discount on the class machinery fee as well as the fee for E0, if included.
DNV is developing another survey arrangement, tailor-made for operators who have implemented a condition monitoring-based maintenance philosophy and strategy.
