NPM is the knowledge-management hub in DNVs class concept Nauticus on board. It has been upgraded in user features and information availability in line with the following developments:

" New technology has made it possible to integrate the Nauticus 3D Graphic Model into the class production system. It is now possible to view it on the Internet by making use of a standard web browser.

" New IT applications feeding information into the NPM have been added and existing tools upgraded

" The various IT applications used as information providers have now been closely integrated, making it possible to carry out search tasks in the NPM on a variety of class-related topics for a selected ship or the whole fleet. It is also possible to benchmark ones own vessels against the DNV fleet.

The Product Model
An NPM is established for each vessel classified with DNV. It serves as the main vehicle for collecting, analysing and disseminating information and knowledge collected through all the class-related activities in which DNV is involved. These activities cover plan approval with advanced analytical calculations, certification of materials, components and equipment, inspection of newbuildings on site and results of surveys during the operational phase.

Information in the NPM is available to owners through DNV Exchange. Use of new technology has made it possible to gain access to an expanded scope of information. Combined with advanced search tools it opens up new doors for structuring information about your own ship and allows benchmarking ones vessels against an average of all DNV-classed vessels.

Nauticus Construction
Nauticus Construction represents a completely new solution to support and follow up ship construction at site. The key is a creative use of the Nauticus 3D Graphic Model (3DGM).

The speed of construction at modern shipyards represents a considerable challenge for the owners site team in terms of maintaining proper control of overall project progress, and to ensure all elements are produced to the required level of quality. Traditional methods of following-up frequently prove inadequate due to the vast amount of information which must be managed.

The 3DGM is cut into smaller modules representing hull blocks utilised in the construction phase, which makes it possible to visualise each block. It is a host for all relevant information such as milestones for monitoring status and progress, inspection comments, photographs, digital drawings possible to sketch on and for general documents. A status report is automatically generated for each block, and for the entire project. Through advanced filtering techniques it is also possible to visualise status of the project through the 3DGM by illustrating which blocks are accepted according to any chosen milestone.

To streamline the process even further a PDA (Personal Digital Assistant) handheld computer can be integrated to collect inspection data and supply support information during inspection at site.
The status of all blocks together with photos is then available in your palm. When inspecting a block you tick off the relevant milestones and add any comments. Digital photos can be taken with the PDA. When back in the office you put the PDA in a dedicated cradle and the whole system is immediately updated.

As a starting point for a ship life-cycle database, selected information generated throughout the newbuilding period will be transferred to the NPM.

DNV Exchange
The DNV Exchange family has been upgraded and expanded. It is moving from paper to web-based solutions, opening up new possibilities in 3D graphic models.

> DNV Exchange Basic
The free web-based classification status service for our clients has received a significant upgrade. A new certificate and survey status report is downloaded from the web site and sent by
e-mail to defined users and their vessels at a frequency of choice. It also offers a more formal DNV status than the web report, having fixed DNV content and being document based. The report replaces paper listings. It also includes an enhanced version of the DNV register of vessels with an extended data set and improved functionality for browsing between vessels.

> DNV Exchange Member
The next level in the Exchange family, DNV Exchange Member, extends the upgraded Basic version. All previous functionality available in the PC-based version is now available on the web, together with several new web-
based additions. Web services include Owners Page for vessel operators own certificates and inspections. Other features available as an option on the web are survey reports, documents of class status snapshots at periodic intervals, ability to select and order surveys online and access to scanned vessel drawings.

> DNV Exchange Nauticus and NAUTICUS (Operation)
The Class Notation NAUTICUS (Operation) makes use of the most advanced version of DNV Exchange, the DNV Exchange Nauticus, as gateway to the NPM. An essential part of NAUTICUS (Operation) is the provision of a 3DGM as information carrier for some of the information in the Product Model. In the updated model the amount of information made available through the 3DGM has been increased. Access to the 3DGM through Internet and standard web browsers is made available by the use of new technology. As an information carrier it requires no software installation.
For owners with DNV Exchange Nauticus software installed additional information related to the vessels condition is stored and displayed in the 3DGM.

The 3DGM is presents information on coating condition in tanks, displayed in colour codes. Owners who make use of this option can define their own grading criteria. The compartment detail shown in this case is between frames and between stringers.

Electronic approval
eApproval has been introduced as a new class service for yards, designers and manufacturers involved in newbuilding projects.

eApproval is being accessed through DNV Exchange on the web. It reduces the mailing time to a minimum and increases the availability of approved documentation for the client. DNV clients are able to upload documentation to DNV for approval, have continued access to status of the documents and download approved documentation. eApproval handles submittal, registration, approval, verification and return of electronic documentation.

DNVs production system has been developed to include comments and stamping of electronic drawings as well as returning approved documentation electronically. Together with online Class Rules, the service improves the response time and availability of class plan-approval services.
