UNS is one client that has experienced improved efficiency by making use of a CBM strategy.

DNVs evaluation of Condition Based Maintenance (CBM) on the Stena Alexita has been an eye-opener for us, says Niels-Bjørn Nielssen, Senior Fleet Manager of Ugland Nordic Shipping (UNS). It has helped us improve our maintenance system.

Overcoming pitfalls
DNVs experience is that the investment in new condition-monitoring equipment, training and routines too often turns out to give little or no benefit, mainly due to a lack of integration with existing ship maintenance systems and routines. Our understanding of the typical problems has led us to develop a facilitation service where we help owners and operators to make the CBM scheme work.

The DNV CBM facilitation service is being developed together with major players such as A.P. Møller and Teekay Shipping. It focuses on helping owners and operators overcome typical CBM challenges and pitfalls, improving maintenance efficiency and ensuring cost-efficient implementation. The service consists of five modules that are offered together or independently. The modules will be tailored to match the individual owner or operators specific needs.

For clients who succeed in implementing a CBM scheme, DNV is developing a tailor-made survey arrangement.
