Assessing yards to build HSLCs

DNV has secured a second contract to re-evaluate U.S. yards applying to build new Ro-Ro High Speed Light Crafts (HSLC) for operation in Alaska. These yards have already been through a first-bid round where DNV was involved in measuring their capabilities.

Consequences of tanker phase-out

The new schedule for phase-out of single-hull tankers has been set by the amendment of Regulation 13G in MARPOL 73/78 Annex I. It has not created a rush of newbuilding orders, but preparedness varies for different tanker segments.

The compiled figures for 2000 from the three major port state regimes Tokyo MOU, Paris MOU and USA, confirm DNV is in the top position for the second consecutive year.

Hot surfaces in engine rooms

Oil leakage hitting hot spots on engines is the major cause of engine-room fires on board ship. According to DNV casualty statistics, more than 60 % of all engine-room fires have been initiated by a hot spot. Fires caused by oil leakage / hot spots are in general more serious than fires caused by other factors.
