Renaming of Class Notations W1-OC and W1: • NAUT-OC replaces W1-OC • NAUT-AW replaces W1
The two class notations W1-OC and W1 have now been changed to NAUT-OC (Ocean areas and Coastal waters) and NAUT-AW (All Waters) with effect from 1 July 2001. The changes do not appear in the revised paper version of Nautical Safety of 1 January 2001. They came into force 1 July 2001 and are included in the electronic version.
The reason behind the change of name is that DNV will avoid the term Watch One used on the classification certificate, implying that flag authority has granted the ship permission to operate with single-man watch-keeping during hours of darkness. It is important to avoid situations leading to conflict with IMO decisions.
The name changes do not affect the philosophy or content of the rules. Regarding manning of the bridge, the following Guidance Note (Sec. 1, B103) states: It should be noted that manning of the navigational watch at all times shall be in accordance with the national regulations of the flag state and for the waters in which the ship is operating. This is considered the responsibility of the captain of the ship and the officer of the watch.
