Navigating to U.S. Ports after September 11

As a consequence of the September 11 attacks in the United States, a wide range of security measures for ships entering domestic ports have been implemented. With 96 hours pre-arrival notice and various new restrictions on entering terminals, advanced planning has become essential to avoid delays.

Two years after the Erika ran aground, the European Union has made considerable progress towards increasing maritime safety. Adoption of the Erika I package of measures and progress made on the Erika II package are major steps towards putting effective rules into place to increase maritime safety and to counter the risks of oil spills.

The human element

Modern machinery installations represent a new and demanding world for ship operators. The installations are assembled from optimised components and designed to operate at their limits. All too frequently, dire consequences have been the result where old, tried and tested routines have been used as a substitute for the maker’s instructions.

Towards increased LNG trade

International sources predicted in 1995 that LNG trade would double by 2010, with the Far East accounting for about 60% of the trade. Being close to these forecasts today, we see an increased drive for the construction of advanced LNG ships. DNV is preferred among the top three of the classification companies.
