A SOLAS challenge

The World of ResidenSea is a challenge for the SOLAS regime with its new approach to domestic life at sea. This is the first time maritime legislation has faced a ship circumnavigating the world with permanent residents onboard in their own private apartments.

Blocked fuel supply to main diesel engine

A vessel's main diesel engine stopped during voyage, remaining inoperable for a period of approximately an hour. Fortunately the vessel was in open sea and no damage occurred to the ship.

Challenging a new generation

The rapid development of new-generation cruise vessels is a challenge for all parties involved. There is an urgent need for innovative structural solutions as more vessels are delivered from the yards , sizes increase, they carry more passengers and they tend to become more and more specialised.

DNV Maritime Solutions Inc.

DNV is introducing a specialised consultancy company, DNV Maritime Solutions Inc., located in Miami, U.S.A. It creates a customised range of services with emphasis on the cruise industries’ needs, but not excluding conventional cargo ships and other vessels.

Enhanced survival capability

DNV is developing new rules to enhance the survival capability of cruise and passenger vessels in case of damage occurring as a consequence of grounding or collision.

EU Marine Equipment Directive

The Marine Equipment Directive 96/98/EC (MED) as amended by 98/95/EC will be followed up by DNV from 2000-01-01 for ships flying EU or EFTA flags. This applies to all new ships, existing ships not previously carrying such equipment and ships having their equipment replaced.

Fastest-ever reporting time

The final reporting time for surveys has been reduced to one week, thanks to the new Nauticus Production System NPS.

Focusing on the environment

DNV’s class notations Clean and Clean Design have been given a warm welcome from the shipping industry since being introduced in January 2000. 24 contracts have been signed so far, including a majority of passenger vessels and oil, chemicals and liquefied gas tankers.

Heading for the Gold

From a small shipyard on Norway’s west coast, Anna-Synnøve Bye is managing the construction of the world’s first ocean-going luxury resort, The World of ResidenSea. ‘We are heading for the gold medal in an international race demanding top performance in price, quality and time,’ says Bye.

New machinery Rules

The Rules for machinery have been evaluated and revised due to customer feedback related to certification of components and machinery in ships-in-operation surveys.

The World of ResidenSea meets highest rating of Comfort Class

The new cruise vessel is being built to the highest rating of DNV Comfort Class. Comprehensive noise and vibration analyses and mock-up tests have been carried out at the design stage to ensure that the criteria are met.

What is a Large Passenger Ship?

Unfortunately accidents at sea occur with loss of lives, ship and cargo, and sometimes with severe oil spillage. It is difficult to put across the fact that shipping is among the safest means of transportation today, in particular when lives are lost.
