DNV has co-published a new book which aims to develop better investigation procedures and practices in Europe.

Entitled ‘The shaping of public safety investigations of accidents in Europe’, the book aims to encourage European public authorities and safety bodies to develop better investigation procedures and practices.
The book has been prepared by ESReDA’s Accident Investigation Working Group, led by DNV’s Espen Funnemark who comments, “The book is the result of a joint effort by experts in accident investigation and analysis from 10 European countries and almost every industrial sector. It aims to inform a broad audience, including European policy-making agencies, about recent developments in public safety investigations, and also contains suggestions for actions and options for further development.”
According to Funnemark, another important objective of the book is to help achieve consensus on the notion of public safety investigations by clarifying the existing diversity that exists between nations and sectors.
He explains, “The ESReDA Working Group wants to contribute to such consensus by actively shaping a perspective from new directions: a systems approach, multi-sectoral learning, and a focus on safety aspects before, during and after the event, based on a common methodology.”
Henrik Kortner, DNV’s chief specialist in safety and reliability and the president of ESReDA adds, “Considerable experience has been put into this publication. I hope the book encourages European public authorities and safety bodies to develop better investigation procedures and practices, and that it also helps the many organisations and individuals worldwide involved in accident investigations.”
