Shipping is exposed to a new reality… The market is calling for a more proactive and transparent approach to handling environmental issues. Shipping needs to act now! “Shipping has no more than two to three years to demonstrate emission-reduction results. To be able to use this restricted timeframe effectively, the industry has to start searching for voluntary improvements now.”

Tor E. Svensen, chief operating officer of DNV Maritime, emphasising the need for action.

At a recent DNV press conference, Tor E. Svensen, chief operating officer of DNV Maritime, emphasised this need for action, and added:
“Society at large has sharpened its environmental focus dramatically over the past few years. Authorities and regulators have followed this up by predicting new regulations. Although transportation by ship is far more efficient and causes less emissions than the alternatives, the shipping industry will have to pay much more attention to the environment in the future.”

To support the shipping industry’s decision-making processes, DNV Software is offering its Environmental Performance System (EPS) to the market. The EPS is a commercial, stand-alone application aimed at helping corporations to track and report the environmental effects of their operations.
The EPS is a web-based reporting tool which complies with the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) standards and ISO 14001. It is delivered through an Application Service Provider (APS) service hosted from DNV’s data centre at Høvik. DNV’s knowledge and services in this area combined with DNV Software’s EPS will strengthen DNV’s client offerings and help clients put their environmental commitment into action.

The EPS accommodates useful information and can:

  • Cost-effectively collect, process, store and report environmental information

  • Continuously follow-up and measure the environmental performance in a flexible way – according to a defined hierarchy or throughout the fleet

  • Benchmark and profile environmental performance internally and externally

  • Administer users, organisations, indicators and parameters

Recently, the following contracts were signed:

  • Fred Olsen Marine Services AS – a company in the Fred. Olsen Group that is involved in technical and marine services to the shipping and offshore industries – signed a contract involving its FPSO and cruise vessel divisions. The contract included Environmental Consultancy services delivered by Maritime Solutions and 1-day Training and Hosting services provided by DNV Software.

  • Golar Management – the only shipping company dedicated exclusively to LNG transportation signed a contract to implement the EPS solution in its fleet of 12 LNG and FSRU fleet. It will also report Onboard Sailing Vessels directly, without an internet connection using a satellite mail-service.

In addition, DNV has chosen to implement the EPS for corporate SHE reporting as from 2008.

Knut Helle, who is responsible for the marketing and sales of this product, says that DNV is experiencing a significant increase in inquiries about solutions like EPS, especially from the maritime industry, and expects to provide this service to a larger number of customers in various industry segments in the future.
There is still a long way to go in motivating companies to see the potential in such investments rather than looking on them as costs and in convincing them to invest in a third-party tool to replace in-house Excel sheets.
