In 2004, CP Ships operated a volume of 2.3 million TEU and more than 80% of this was North American exports and imports. CP Ships is a regional specialist serving a dedicated network.

The proliferation of technical know-how and competency management is a growing challenge for shipping companies around the world. The introduction of new crews and office staff coupled with a growing world fleet that is leading to an increased demand for qualified personnel are adding to the challenge.

Vorsetzen Bereederungs- und Schiffahrtskontor GmbH & Co. KG (VBSK) is a subsidiary of Germany’s Bernhard Schulte Group and manages about 25 ships from Hamburg. The company was the first in the world to implement the Integrated Survey Programme on five of its 2,500 TEU container vessels in 2001.

Today, almost all ship rudders are of a similar type and design. Even when the ships increase in size and speed, standard rudders are used instead of putting as much effort into the rudder design as into the design of the rest of the hull.

The number of container ships classed with DNV is growing, and DNV’s long-term goal is to achieve further growth in the containership segment. As we attract new customers, it is important for us to ensure that they are satisfied with DNV as their classification partner. Last year, one of our key container-ship customers gave us valuable input on some areas where they wanted DNV to look at their practice.

P&O Nedlloyd Acapulco is a 2,600 TEU container ship managed by VBSK, Hamburg. It was built by Hyundai in 2001 and trades out of South America. It was one of the first ships to enter the DNV “Integrated Survey Programme” (ISP).
Looking back at the year 2004, once again we can note new records for many areas in the container shipping market. Based on the highest global economic growth for more than 30 years and especially the still booming Chinese and other Asian economies, the global container trade experienced another year of a huge increase in volumes. Capacity did not keep pace with demand in the charter market and most freight markets also picked up. Together with the good utilisation, not only tramp owners but also liner operators reported a very positive year in 2004. With order activities almost as high as in 2003, the orderbook reached a level of more than 4.1 m TEU – about 56% of the existing fleet.
