DNV has passed the 100 million gross tons mark by taking Danaos Shipping's container ship P&O Nedlloyd Caracas into class on delivery from Korea's Samsung Heavy Industry yard.

DNV has, together with Norwegian-based Seagull AS, developed an onboard course for senior deck officers on container vessels that use or are planning to use DNV’s Integrated Survey Program – ISP.
Seagull and DNV have jointly developed a computer-based training program (CBT) for hull and structure inspections onboard container ships. It is intended to provide individual training and is part of Seagull’s suite of computer-based training facilities.
During the past six months, there has been growing concern as fatigue cracking on ship sides has been brought to the attention of the industry. The press has run reports on extensive repairs in the interface between ship side longitudinals and web frames as well as WT bulkheads. Fatigue cracks develop over time and may eventually penetrate the ship side and cause leakages. When they occur in fuel oil tanks in ports, they may cause severe environmental embarrassment.

The reefer container capacity on board container carriers has been increasing for the past few years. These installations give rise to new technical problems with respect to ventilation, electrical power supply and control systems that are not currently covered by DNV rules.

There are not many Norwegian-based container ship operators, since the Norwegian shipping cluster is mostly into other types of tonnage. However, the Jahre-Wallem shipping constellation – a technical manager of vessels – is to be found in Sandefjord, some 80 kilometres south of Oslo. This company is 50 percent owned by Jahre Dahl Bergesen – a commercial manager of vessels. Of a total managed fleet of 20 vessels, nine are container carriers and four are forest-product carriers. The container vessels and forest carriers are all to DNV class.
The continuously updated figures on worldwide port handling volumes prove the expectations presented in the last Container Update, which were based on the partly preliminary figures of major players. The top 20 ports showed an average increase of more than 14% compared with 2002 and, together with figures for several additional ports, this results in an average global increase of at least 12% for the past year.
