Korean shipyards and DNV develop very large container ships

DNV has worked with Daewoo SME on the development of a 9300TEU design and with Hyundai HI on a 9600TEU Design. Studies have also been carried out on Hyundai HI’s 7200TEU design.

Seaspan implements Container EXPRESS

“This is a major uplift into the North American container market,” says Sam Behramfram at the DNV Vancouver office. “We managed to transfer five ships being built to Lloyd’s class to DNV upon delivery from the Samsung shipyard in South Korea. We won the contract in tough competition with GL and Lloyd’s. This is the first North American client to make use of the Container EXPRESS package.”

Mixed stowage: 20ft containers in 40ft bays

From 26 July 1999, OSHA (Occupational Safety & Health Administration, Department of Labour, USA) prohibited employees from working on top of containers in cargo holds. As a consequence of this, the way 20ft containers are stored in 40ft bays has changed.

Container market highlights late 2002

The recovery of charter rates in the container market continued up to the beginning of November 2002. Since January, the Howe Robinson (HRCI) weighted container charter index showed an average rate increase of more than 45%.
