DNV often receives customer requests for acceptance of installations involving Containerised Generator Set (CGS) arrangements. This newsletter aims to define the guidelines and requirements that clarify mainly DNV acceptance criteria for the temporary installation of a CGS.

New rule book for self-elevating units: The major news in the April release of DNV’s service documents is the new Offshore Service Specification; OSS-104 Rules for Classification of Self-Elevating units. This rule book follows a new format and provides a clear overview of all the relevant requirements and procedures applicable to a self-elevating unit built to DNV class.

In Resolution MEPC.190(60), the IMO Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) adopted amendments to MARPOL Annex VI that designate a North American Emission Control Area (ECA). This is intended to ensure more stringent control of emissions of sulphur oxides (SOx), nitrogen oxides (NOx) and particulate matter (PM) than the limits that apply globally.
The United States Coast Guard has announced new ballast water management (BWM) requirements that will probably make mid-ocean ballast water exchange insufficient. Instead, ships will be required to have onboard ballast water management treatment systems that prevent invasive species from being shipped into US waters.

The Norwegian Maritime Directorate (NMD) has accepted that the requirements for a fixed deck foam system as described in DNV’s class notation LFL* are equivalent to the requirements stated in IMO Res. A.673(16) regulation 3.9.2.3.3 and the IBC Code 11.3.3 to 11.3.12.

Reference is made to the revised LSA Code, applicable from 1 January 2012, where the person weight for the design and testing of liferafts has been increased from 75 to 82.5 kg.

New requirements from the Turkish Authorities to use low sulphur fuel oils in Turkish ports and waters entered into force on 1 January 2012. The Turkish requirements are much in line with those which already apply in EU ports and waters. We are seeing an increase in requests for clarifications of these requirements. This newsletter provides some of the latest information DNV has received so far.
