IPCM – A Model For Managing Procurement Risk
DNV IT GS has achieved exciting results from pilot projects with DNV Research and Innovation into risk management for IT Procurements (IPCM).
DNV consultants Ton Tijdink and Jean-Louis Letouezy examine the progress towards a new competency.
Demand side aspects of IT-intensive developments, particularly procurement operations or maintaining control of outsourcing, are emerging as areas where our customers want to manage their risk much more effectively.
While IT suppliers are continually investing in process improvement for projects and services – using best practices like CMMI®for Development and IT Service CMM (for IT service management) – their customer organisations are still struggling with formulating demand, testing purchases and managing thousands of different suppliers and acquisitions.
As a result, there is considerable potential for process improvement in organisations’ IT procurement. Moreover, there have been comparatively few initiatives across Europe that fully organise these possibilities into coherent services for customer organisations.
To address this market need, DNV Research and Innovation and DNV IT GS developed an IPCM (IT Procurement Capability Model).
This combines IPCM governance-related process support, DNV’s risk management expertise and SEI's CMMI for Acquisition Organisations.
We have already been able to demonstrate the value of IPCM in several pilot projects: The chosen companies were a French manufacturer and in the Netherlands, an internet company and a government agency.
