Storage and distribution is the link between all stages of the product supply chain and retail. The BRC Global Standard – Storage and Distribution was established to assist retailers and other users in their fulfilment of legal obligations and protection of the consumer by:

• Providing a common basis for evaluating companies involved in the storage and distribution of products

• Enabling accredited certification of companies supplying products and services to retail and allied industries

The standard is risk based with a strong emphasis on hazard and risk analysis to identify and manage potential product safety risks together with documented quality management systems. This is combined with best practice requirements for managing the operation and the conditions of the storage sites.

EU regulations (No. 178/2002, No. 852/2004) legally oblige food storage and distribution companies to ensure systems are in place to supply safe and legal products.

The BRC Global Standard – Storage and Distribution contains separate modules for the different sectors within the supply chain such as storage, distribution, wholesaling and contracted services (product inspection, packing chilling, freezing, defrosting). Procedures based on HACCP for food products, are supported by specific prerequisites including:

  • Infrastructural and equipment requirements

  • Safe handling, storage and transport

  • Food waste handling

  • Pest control procedures

  • Sanitation procedures

  • Maintenance of the cold chain

  • The health of staff

  • Personal hygiene

  • Training

Certification to this standard demonstrates your company’s competence in maintaining product safety and integrity. The standard enables your organisation to:

  • Provide evidence of commitment and, in case of food safety incident, legal defence in the frame of the "due diligence" concept

  • Build and operate a management system capable of helping the logistic company to better meet food safety requirements and legal compliance

  • Provide a tool for food safety performance improvement by monitoring and measuring food safety performance effectively

  • Ensure effective product recall, if needed.
