GlobalGAP was issued by the European retailers in cooperation with fruit and vegetable producers.
GlobalGAP, “Euro Retailer Produce working group – Good Agriculture Practices” is a certification scheme specifically devoted to fruit and vegetables, and was promoted by the most important retailers in Europe – not only to assure food safety, but also to control relevant environmental and social items.
All the food chain operators – from the farm to the fork – need to improve their capability to compete in a very hard market, offering, first of all, confidence to the consumers about food safety and food quality.
"GlobalGAP Fruit and Vegetables", has been developed by a European group of representatives from all stages in the fruit and vegetables sector with the support from producer organisations outside the EU. Started as an initiative by retailers in 1997, the Euro-Retailer Produce Working Group (EUREP), the current version of the GlobalGAP document and procedures has been agreed among partners from the entire food chain for fruit and vegetables.
