Mother Nature is known for being uncooperative in the Gulf of Mexico, with substantial storm and hurricane activity as well as significant fog and visibility issues at the coastal receiving terminals. Obviously, the use of shuttle tankers entails some concerns from both a safety and a business interruption standpoint. DNV was therefore asked to ensure the safety and performance of this first FPSO and shuttle tanker design.

Also in this issue: LNG is facing resistance from several stakeholders in the US, mostly due to a focus on extreme worst-case scenarios instead of a risk-based approach. DNV has developed such an approach which analyses the risks of accidental spills from LNG transport by sea. It meets the stakeholders’, and in particular society’s, expectations for safe marine operations, especially around onshore terminals.
