The globalisation of the aerospace supply chain represents a risk to the aviation, space & defence stakeholders. Certification of suppliers to the appropriate aerospace quality management standard will ensure that suppliers maintain appropriate and robust management systems.

Purpose

AS/EN series of standards were released in late 1999 by SAE International in North America and AECMA in Europe. They are supported by the International Aerospace Quality Group (IAQG).

Harmonisation of international aerospace standards benefit suppliers as they are being subject to a common, universal set of quality requirements. The four primary aerospace quality standards are AS/EN 9100, AS/EN9110, AS/EN9120 and AS9003.

Since safety and reliability are vital issues in the aerospace industry, requirements for quality management are exceptional.

Manufacturers, suppliers and service organisations succeeding in this highly competitive global market are those who regard quality management as a key business driver. Independent AS/EN9100 registration confirms their commitment to quality, safety and reliability.

Many large Aerospace OEMs have indicated that certification to the AS/EN9100 document through the Industry Controlled Other Party (ICOP) process will result in less oversight of the suppliers. The Boeing Company has already indicated that they expect suppliers to be certified to AS9100.

Benefits

Certification according to the appropriate aerospace standard allows an aerospace supplier to be entered into the Online Aerospace Supplier Information System (OASIS) database.

Large aerospace, space, and defence customers have made it mandatory for their suppliers to be certified if they are to remain in their approved supplier list.

From a supplier’s point of view; being certified by a recognized certification body might result in fewer customer audits.
